Bifold Doors Repair and Adjustment

Bifold doors fold a run of hinged panels along a track, so every panel depends on the ones beside it. When one drops slightly or a roller wears, the whole set can start to drag, catch or refuse to lock. Bifold doors repair usually starts with finding which panel, hinge or roller is out of line, then putting that right without replacing the doors.

Common bifold door faults

The most frequent complaint is a door that has become heavy or stiff to fold. Grit in the bottom track, a worn roller or a hinge that has loosened can all add resistance. Left alone, a stiff panel puts extra strain on the others as you push the set open, so small problems tend to spread along the run.

Other faults include panels that no longer line up when closed, a lead door that will not latch, draughts along the meeting edges and handles that feel loose. Some of these are adjustment issues; others mean a part has worn out. Describing exactly what happens, and on which panel, helps separate the two.

Bifold door dropped out of line

A bifold door dropped at one end often scrapes the track, leaves a visible gap at the top or catches the frame as it closes. The weight of a glazed panel can settle over time, or a top or bottom carrier can wear. Many systems have adjustment points at the hinges and carriers that let the panels be raised and realigned.

Adjustment needs care, because moving one panel changes the gaps to its neighbours. If you are tempted to work out how to fix bifold doors yourself, keep to cleaning the track and checking for loose screws; avoid lifting panels off the track or forcing them, as glazed panels are heavy and can be damaged or fall.

Rollers, tracks and running gear

Rollers and carriers carry the panels along the track, top or bottom depending on the system. When they wear, the panels sit lower and run less smoothly. Replacing them restores the running height, but the parts have to suit the particular door system, so identifying the manufacturer and profile is part of the survey.

A damaged or distorted track is a different problem from a worn roller. Dents, debris build-up and settlement in the threshold can all stop panels running freely. Keeping the bottom track clear of leaves and grit, and cleaning it gently from time to time, reduces wear between repairs.

Locks, handles and seals

The lead panel usually carries the main lock and handle, while the other panels are held by shoot bolts at the top and bottom. A lock that turns stiffly may simply be fighting against panels that have moved out of line, so alignment is checked before parts are replaced. Where the mechanism itself has failed, a matching replacement can be fitted.

Worn or flattened seals between panels let in draughts and water. Renewing them restores the weather protection without changing the door. If the glass in a panel has misted between the panes, that is a sealed unit fault; our misted double glazing page explains that repair.

Repair or replace your bifold doors?

Most faults on a sound set of doors are worth repairing: adjustment, new rollers, a lock or new seals can make the doors work properly again. Replacement becomes a consideration when frames are distorted, parts are no longer available for an older system, or several problems have worn the set out at once.

Frequently asked questions

How to fix bifold doors that are stiff?

Start by cleaning the bottom track and checking for loose screws. If the doors still drag, catch or will not lock, the panels usually need adjusting or worn rollers replacing, which is best left to an installer.

Can a dropped bifold door be adjusted?

Often, yes. Many systems have adjustment points at the hinges and carriers that let the panels be raised and realigned. Worn carriers may need replacing as well.

How long does a bifold door repair take?

It depends on whether the doors need adjusting or parts have to be ordered for that system. Adjustment is usually quicker than replacing rollers, locks or seals.

What affects the cost of repairing bifold doors?

The fault, the door system and parts availability, the number of panels affected and whether locks or seals also need renewing.
