How Long Does a Conservatory Roof Replacement Actually Take?

What happens on each day, and the four things that stretch a job beyond the estimate.

The question behind this question is usually practical: how long is the back of my house open, and do I need to move furniture out of the way. Roof replacements are among the shortest jobs we do relative to the difference they make.

Sizes and access vary, so we give a programme in writing with the quote rather than a stock figure. What follows is how the days generally fall.

The shape of a typical job

Most replacements follow the same sequence, whether the room is small or large:

What makes it take longer

Access is the biggest single factor. A rear conservatory reached through the house, or one behind a narrow side passage, changes how quickly material moves in and out.

The other three are the internal finish, weather and the box gutter. A plastered ceiling with downlights adds drying and second fix time that a clip in ceiling panel does not. Persistent heavy rain slows the external stage. A failed box gutter against the house wall is often the real source of a leak, and putting it right properly takes longer than covering it up.

Is the room open overnight?

No. We work to leave the structure weathertight at the end of every working day. If the forecast is against us we will phase the strip out so we are not opening more than we can close.

You can keep using the rest of the house throughout. Most people move furniture to the middle of the conservatory or into an adjacent room for the duration.

Before the fitters arrive

Clear the room if you can, including anything on the dwarf wall sills, and let us know about parking and side access when we survey rather than on the morning.

If pets use the room, plan where they will be. Doors get propped, and that is the single most common cause of an escaped cat on any glazing job.

Frequently asked questions

Can the roof be replaced in one day?

Very small lean to roofs occasionally are, but we would rather quote honestly for two to four days than promise one and leave the finish rushed. Your written programme comes with the quote.

Do I need to be at home for the whole job?

Only for access at the start and to sign off at the end. Many customers give us access in the morning and go to work.

Will there be much mess inside the house?

The strip out is external. The messiest stage is plastering the new ceiling, and we sheet up for that. Waste goes off site with us.

How soon can you start after I accept the quote?

It depends on the system, since insulated roofs are made to your measurements after survey. We confirm a lead time in writing when you order rather than quoting an optimistic figure to win the job.
