Aluminium sliding doors
Aluminium sliding doors are chosen for their slim sightlines. Because aluminium is strong, the frame around each panel can be kept narrow, so more of the opening is glass and the view to the garden is broken by fewer vertical lines. Thermally broken frames separate the inner and outer faces of the profile so the frame does not simply conduct the cold indoors.
Aluminium can be powder coated in a wide range of colours, including different colours inside and out, which helps when the doors face a garden but sit beside a kitchen with its own colour scheme. If you are comparing materials more widely, our aluminium doors page sets out the full range.
How sliding doors compare with other garden doors
Sliding doors move along a track, so they need no space to swing into the room or onto the patio. That suits rooms where furniture sits close to the glass, or where a deck or path runs right up to the house. The trade-off is that one panel always stays in front of another, so the clear opening is narrower than the full frame width.
If you want the whole opening clear in summer, compare bifold doors, which fold back to one side. For a narrower opening with a traditional look, French doors open outwards in a pair, and patio doors cover the wider family of garden door options.
Planning the opening
Start with the width of the opening and how you will use it. Two panels suit most openings; three or four panels suit wider spans, with some systems letting panels stack behind one another. Decide which panel you will use most often and which side it should open from, because that affects where furniture can go.
The threshold matters too. A low threshold gives an easier step between inside and out, but the detail needs to be right for drainage at that position. Where an opening is being widened, the structural work above it needs planning before the door is ordered, which is discussed at the survey.
What affects the price of sliding doors
Sliding door prices depend on the overall size, the number of panels, the frame material and colour, the glass specification and the type of track, from a standard inline slider to a lift-and-slide system for very large panels. Any building work to form or widen the opening also changes the scope.

Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between sliding doors and bifold doors?
Sliding doors slide on tracks and stack behind each other. Bifold doors fold concertina-style to one side. Sliding doors have slimmer frames; bifolds offer a wider clear opening.
How big can sliding doors be?
Individual panels can be up to 3m tall and 3m wide. Multi-track systems can span 6m or more.
Are aluminium sliding doors better than uPVC?
Aluminium allows slimmer frames and a wider colour range, while uPVC suits many standard openings. The survey compares both against your opening and budget.
Do sliding doors need space to open?
No. The panels slide along a track, so nothing swings into the room or onto the patio. That suits rooms with furniture close to the glass.
How many panels should my sliding doors have?
Two panels suit most openings. Wider spans can take three or four panels. The right number depends on the width and which panel you will use most.
What is a lift-and-slide door?
A system where the panel lifts slightly off its seals as the handle turns, so large, heavy panels move easily. It suits very wide openings.
