What we fit for Cardiff homes

On the window side we fit uPVC and aluminium frames in several opening styles. Standard casements are the everyday choice for bedrooms and kitchens. Flush casements sit level with the outer frame, which gives a flatter, more traditional face that suits older brick fronts. Tilt and turn windows open inward, so you can clean the outside pane from indoors, and they work well on upper floors and in flats. We also fit sash windows and full bay replacements.

For doors, the range covers front and back doors, patio doors and bifold doors. Planning windows and a door in the same order lets you compare colours and handles across the house. If you are mainly after windows, our main windows in Cardiff page goes into more detail on the frame options.

Matching windows to Cardiff's housing

Cardiff has a real mix of housing, and the right window depends on the street as much as the budget. Victorian and Edwardian terraces often have a ground-floor bay, sometimes a two-storey one, with narrow side lights and a deep head. Replacing a bay well means measuring each facet separately and checking whether the existing structure is carrying any load through the old frames before anything is taken out.

Inter-war and post-war semis tend to have wider, simpler openings, sometimes with a small top light. Here the decision is usually about sightlines and opening sashes: fewer, larger panes look cleaner, while extra opening lights help ventilation. On newer estates the openings are usually standard sizes, and the main choices are colour, glass and whether to match neighbouring houses.

We talk through these differences at the survey rather than offering one style for every house, because a window that looks right on a 1990s estate can look out of place in a row of period terraces.

Glass and energy performance

Windows carry an energy rating that takes in the frame and the glass together, not just the glass. Our guide to window energy ratings explains how to read the label and what the letters mean, which is useful when you are comparing written quotes side by side.

Double glazing uses two panes with a sealed gap between them. Triple glazing adds a third pane, which helps on exposed elevations or rooms that face a busy road, but it is heavier and not always the best value for every opening. If you want to compare the two, see triple glazing in Cardiff. We can price both on the same quote so you can decide room by room.

Conservation areas and listed homes in Cardiff

Cardiff has a number of conservation areas, and some streets have extra controls on what can change on the front of a house. Listed buildings have stricter rules again. Before ordering anything for a property in one of these areas, check with Cardiff Council's planning team what is allowed, and ask whether consent is needed.

Flush casements and sash styles are often the starting point where the look of the street matters. Our guide to conservation areas and listed building glazing covers the questions to ask the council and the details that tend to come up.

Repair, re-glaze or replace

Not every problem means new frames. A misted unit, where condensation forms between the two panes, usually means the seal on that sealed unit has failed. The glass can often be swapped on its own while the frame stays in place, and our misted double glazing page explains how that works. Dropped sashes, stiff handles and failed hinges can also usually be repaired.

Replacement starts to make more sense when several problems appear at once: frames that have warped or rotted, draughts that come back after adjustment, or old single glazing that cannot be upgraded. At the survey we will say plainly which windows are worth repairing and which are better replaced.

What affects the cost

The written quote depends on the number of openings and their sizes, the frame material, the opening style, the glass specification and any colour or finish. Access matters too: upper-floor bays, narrow lanes and tight parking can change how the job is planned. For a fuller picture of the factors, read our double glazing cost guide.

If you already hold a quote from another company for the same specification, show it to us. We beat any like-for-like quote.

From survey to fitting

We visit, measure every opening, talk through styles and glass, and then send a written quote. Once you are happy and the order is placed, the frames are made to those measurements and we agree a fitting date with you. On the day, old frames come out, new ones go in and are sealed and finished inside and out. Your installation is covered by our 10-year guarantee.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need planning permission to replace windows in Cardiff?

Replacing windows on a house with similar-looking ones often falls outside planning permission, but conservation areas, listed buildings, flats and homes with specific planning conditions can be different. Check with Cardiff Council before ordering if any of those apply to you.

Can you replace just a few windows rather than the whole house?

Yes. You can replace one window, one elevation or the whole house. We will match colour and style where possible so the new frames sit comfortably beside the ones you keep.

Should I choose uPVC or aluminium for a Cardiff terrace?

Both work. uPVC comes in many colours and woodgrain finishes. Aluminium gives slimmer frames and more glass within an opening, which is worth comparing on a bay. We can quote both at the survey so you can compare them on your own house.

Can misted units be replaced without new frames?

Usually, yes. If the frame is sound, we can replace the sealed glass unit on its own and leave the frame in place.

Do you offer finance?

Finance can be introduced through an FCA-regulated provider. Ask about it at your survey and we will explain the options.
